When Will I Receive My Social Security Check This Month?

If you are disabled and you receive disability benefits from the Social Security Administration, those benefits are probably an important source of financial security and stability while you are unable to work. Understandably, you may have come to rely upon those benefits, which may be an important part of your monthly budget. As a result, you likely want to plan for when you’ll receive benefits each month. Let’s take a closer look at the benefits available and the typical payment schedules.

Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits

The first type of disability benefit offered by the Social Security Administration is Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI for short. SSDI benefits are intended for individuals with a qualifying medical condition that has caused them to be unable to work for at least one continuous calendar year or more. In addition, in order to be improved for benefits, an individual must be “insured” in the eyes of the Social Security Administration. This means that the applicant worked a job for enough time and, during that time, regularly paid a portion of their salary in taxes into the Social Security system.

SSDI benefits are not based on an individual’s particular condition but instead are based on work and earning history. The calculation method can be complicated, but as a general rule payment amounts are higher for those individuals who worked longer and had higher salaries, and thus paid more into the system overtime.

SSDI benefits are usually paid monthly, and payment dates depend upon an individual’s birthdate. The payment schedule for those who began receiving benefits after May 1997 is as follows:

  • If the applicant’s birthdate occurs on the first through the 10th of the month, the SSDI payment will arrive on the second Wednesday of each month.
  • If the applicant’s birthdate occurs on the 11th through the 20th of the month, SSDI benefits will be paid on the third Wednesday of each month.
  • If the applicant’s birthdate occurs between the 21st and the 31st of the month, the SSDI payment will be made on the fourth Wednesday of that month.

As noted, there is an exception to this rule. Those who began receiving benefits before May of 1997 will be paid on the third of the month.

In 2024, the maximum amount you can earn from Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is $3,822 per month. In 2025, the maximum Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefit in 2025 is expected to be $4,018 per month.

Supplemental Security Income Benefits

The second type of disability benefit offered by the Social Security Administration is Supplemental Security Income, or SSI for short. As with SSDI benefits, in order to receive SSI benefits, an individual must have a qualifying medical condition that has rendered them disabled for at least one year or more. Unlike the case with SSDI benefits, however, an applicant does not need to be “insured.” Instead, they must have income and resources below a certain annual limit established by the Social Security Administration. This limit is known as the federal benefit rate, and it may change from year to year, depending on various economic factors.

Generally, SSI benefits are paid on the first of the month. In 2024, the maximum monthly SSI payment is $943 for an individual and $1,415 per couple. In 2025, the maximum monthly SSI payment is expected to be $967 per individual and $1,450 per month per couple.

Can You Receive More Than One Payment Per Month?

Often, people look at the benefit payment schedule and wonder if it is ever possible to receive more than one monthly payment. It is indeed possible. In some situations, individuals receive both SSDI and SSI benefits. Those payments are made on different dates of the month.

In other situations, a double payment may result in a month where the scheduled payment date falls on a weekend. If a scheduled payment date falls on a weekend or a holiday, the payment will typically be made on the Friday before the regularly scheduled payment date. In certain instances, this may result in more than one monthly payment.
