What is a disability

Through the Social Security Administration (SSA), disabled individuals may be eligible for financial compensation. Under federal regulations, a disability is defined as the inability to engage in substantial gainful activities (employment) as a result of a physical or mental impairment. You may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits if:

You developed a serious injury, illness, physical impairment, or mental impairment;
Your disability is expected to be permanent or last for at least twelve months;
You cannot perform the work that you did before; and
You cannot “adjust” to a new position—meaning suitable alternative work is not available.

What Types of Social Security Disability Benefits are Available?

When you hear people mention Social Security disability benefits, they could be referring to one of two different programs: SSDI and SSI.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is funded out of the Social Security trust fund. To qualify for SSDI benefits, an applicant must satisfy certain financial and legal requirements. Among other things, an applicant must demonstrate sufficient work history to prove that they have “paid in” to the system.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) does not require any work history to qualify. Instead, eligibility for SSI benefits is based solely on medical need and financial need. If you have too much income/assets, you can be denied SSI benefits on those grounds.
